Playlist Update: Gnarls Barkley

Lately, all the additions to my ITunes playlists seem to have a common flavor. Three of them actually: Quirky, annoying and divine. It's not my fault, It's what's around now and people seem to like it too. Gnarls Barkley, the duo that made history staying for four consecutive weeks at number one in the UK singles chart with the weird/genius single "Crazy", releases an album today. And –surprise– it's great, despite not being my cup of tea at all. Some bizarre mix of classic gospel R'n'B and stringy samples concocted by Danger Mouse and a fat guy from Atlanta with a voice like butter that he discovered. At first I was repulsed by the Al Green-ness of the single (that got 31,000 legal downloads before being physically released) then it kinda grew on me. The album is beautifully coherent and all over the place at the same time. And it has enough electrobeats in it to keep my pulse racing. I have standards, and can't stomach a truly soulful album. Yankee readers: Open your illegal download device of choice NOW or stream the album on their MySpace Page. Also they will play Webster Hall on May 22. I should be in New York: who goes with me?
